Project 1
In Project 1, we were tasked with choosing a film as a reference and designing an environment based on its storyline. As soon as I heard about the project, I immediately envisioned a setting with buildings and backgrounds in the style of Greek mythology. The Percy Jackson series would be ideal for bringing this idea to life, so I chose Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief as my reference.

After that, I started creating a mood board. Since I chose the movie Percy Jackson, I wanted to design Poseidon’s temple. I gathered elements that evoke Greek temples, the sea, and Poseidon himself to achieve this,

I had envisioned four scenes in total.
The first scene prominently features Poseidon’s temple, statue, and a cascading waterfall.
The second scene shows a view of the temple structure through a large hole at the back of the island.
The third scene resembles the moment Percy Jackson first enters Olympus, offering a distant, panoramic view.
The fourth scene is an aerial shot of the entire island from above.

I showed the sketches to my lecturer, and he selected either option 2 or 3. So, I decided to develop those two views for now. However, I wondered if I could find even better views, so I decided to use Blender to create the buildings. I thought using 3D would be a good idea since I still feel I’m not perfect with perspective yet.

I tried to incorporate the elements used in the sketch into the 3D model. Since I’m still not familiar with rendering in Blender, I rendered the image first and then edited it in Photoshop.

Out of the 6 compositions, I liked option 2 the most. However, my lecturer requested the original space, so I found photos that could be applied to option 2.

Since I was finalizing the original space at the end, it was a bit challenging to find photos that matched my composition. I selected about two photos for the original space, and following my lecturer’s feedback, I slightly pushed the entire scene back and added space next to the temple.

| Fig. 1.13 Sketch (Week 10 / 25.11.2024) |
Since the scene was still too zoomed in, I tried to position the temple and its columns as far away as possible. My lecturer also mentioned that the two small columns on the left seemed unnecessary, so I removed them and filled the space with trees.

FEEDBACK
WEEK 6
Specific Feedback: Develop the one on the bottom left and the one on the top right.
General Feedback: When showing the sketches, label them with numbers.

WEEK 9
Specific Feedback: It might be a good idea to combine 2 and 3. For example, place the bridge from 3 next to the temple from 2 and adjust the perspective accordingly.
General Feedback: You need to decide on the original space.

WEEK 10
Specific Feedback: Consider moving the building further into the background and using a zoom-in effect for the video. For the “original space,” instead of 2, use 1 as the base.
General Feedback: The scene feels a bit too close, so it would be better to pull it back slightly overall.

REFLECTION

Experience
In Project 1, I had to create a composition that matched both my chosen concept and the film’s theme. The concept, inspired by Greek mythology, led me to design an environment that could resemble the temple of Poseidon. Using Blender for 3D modelling, I was able to explore the details of my concept and figure out which elements to incorporate.

Observations
As always, I faced challenges when starting the assignment. Even though I had a clear concept due to my interest in Greek mythology, it was difficult to blend that concept with the assignment's requirements.

Findings
While working on the Invisible Set Extension, I came to understand this process better. It’s easy to focus solely on completing the assignment, but the lecturer emphasized the importance of the original space, which helped me avoid getting sidetracked and allowed me to finish the project effectively.
