    Project 1

In Project 1, we were allowed to either transform a character we like into our own style or use a character we had designed in the Character Design section. Since I thought the character from Character Design was quite complex, I decided to go with transforming a character I like.

    Fig. 1.1 Original Jack Frost

The character I chose is Jack Frost from the movie Guardians. I selected this character because I really like his appearance.

I thought it would be nice if Jack Frost had a more youthful, teenage vibe. So, I started by changing his outfit and waited for my lecturer’s confirmation to see if this direction was suitable.

    Fig. 1.3 Sketch (Week 4 / 16.10.2024)

Since I’m still not very familiar with anatomy, there were many parts that needed adjustments. Following my lecturer’s advice, I added more muscle definition to the character and modified areas such as the ankles, calves, and the hood design, as well as the shoulder lines to match.

As shown in Fig. 1.5, he suggested simplifying the hairstyle, so I simplified it accordingly. He also mentioned that a weapon wasn’t necessary, so I decided to remove it altogether.

    Fig. 1.5 Final Sketch Modification (Week 6 / 1.11.2024)

    Fig. 1.6 Process (Week 6 / 1.11.2024)

Next, I tried to create a body shape that closely resembled the sketch. To achieve a basic teenage physique, I placed the sketch directly behind the model and attempted to adjust the shapes accordingly.

    Fig. 1.9 Pre-Final 01 (Week 8-9 / 17-18.11.2024)

From the body shape I managed to complete, I felt that the face and hands looked a bit off. So, I showed Fig. 1.9 to my lecturer, and as expected, I received feedback on the face. However, I had forgotten to enhance the volume by adding more muscle definition, so after receiving the feedback, I quickly made the necessary adjustments.

    Fig. 1.13 Pre-Final 02 (Week 9 / 21.11.2024)

When I rendered the model using lights in Blender, it became clear that I’m still not familiar with the tool. My lecturer also suggested that it would be better to remove the lighting altogether. I noticed that key details appeared blurred or less defined, so I decided to remove the lights entirely and took screenshots instead.

    FEEDBACK

    WEEK 5

Specific Feedback: It might be better to slightly tilt the torso along with the angle of the head bend.

General Feedback: Overall, it's good. It might be work.

    WEEK 6

Specific Feedback: Fix the legs, especially the left leg. It might look better if the ankle is slimmer, and reduce the calf muscle a bit as it’s too prominent. The thigh is too flat, so make it slightly more rounded. The jacket looks too bulky adjust it to show more of the waistline. Make the hood bigger as well. Simplify the hairstyle a bit. Remember that he’s male, so aim for a muscular build. You can leave out the weapon for now. Just focus on the character without it.

General Feedback: Make slight adjustments to the overall body proportions and specific details where needed.

    WEEK 9

Specific Feedback: Add muscles to the body, focusing on the shoulders and arms, ensuring they connect naturally. Slightly widen the shoulders and refine the chest muscles while keeping the waist curve balanced. Extend the area just below the knees slightly, and position the ears just behind the front line of the neck. Make the neck slightly thinner and add deeper shadows to the cheeks and nose for more definition.

General Feedback: Before adding finer details, ensure the face features are clearly marked. Start by getting the body structure correct and balanced. Once the structure is stable, you can move on to adding details for Project 2. Keep the figure from looking too skeletal and maintain subtle details for a cohesive and natural appearance.

    REFLECTION

    Experience

Through the process of creating the human body in 3D, I was able to correct many misunderstandings I had about anatomy. Additionally, I naturally ended up studying more about the placement of muscles. While I still lack knowledge about female muscle structures, I was able to roughly memorize the locations and shapes of some key male muscles.

    Observations

Since I already have experience drawing human faces, developing the face in 3D wasn’t as challenging as I thought it would be. However, more complex parts of the body, like hands, remained difficult. Even after studying references, understanding them, and then attempting to model them in 3D, many areas still felt awkward and unnatural.

    Findings

The human body is undoubtedly one of the most difficult subjects to work on. Creating backgrounds or objects in 3D requires time and imagination for detailed work, but the human body has fixed rules that must be studied and followed. If those rules are even slightly off, the result looks noticeably wrong. However, learning anatomy through 3D modelling, rather than just 2D, has made the concepts stick more effectively for me. I feel like my understanding of anatomy has deepened significantly through this process.
