    Exercise & Assignment Brief

Exercise 1: Quantify & visualize data

For this task, we needed to quantify the chosen items and arrange them into a presentable layout or chart. Lecturers suggested bringing items such as a jar of buttons, coins, or three packs of M&M's.

I didn't have enough coins or buttons so I eventually decided to buy 3 packs of M&M's.

    Fig 1.2 Rough Sketch (Week 1 / 8.2.2024)

Before starting to design the infographic, I did a rough sketch first to substantiate the idea in my head. When the lecturer mentioned that we might categorize things by size or colour, I got an idea immediately away, so it didn't take long to sketch it out.

    Fig 1.3 Process 1 (Week 1 / 8.2.2024)

First, I put away the sketched paper and prepared another A3 paper. I sorted out M&M's as I did in the beginning and then started sketching with a mechanical pencil, as shown in the picture below.

    Fig 1.4 Process 2 (Week 1 / 8.2.2024)

I slightly changed the design because I saw some shortcomings in the previous sketch. And once I finished drawing, I set M&M's according to the standard.

    Exercise 2: L.A.T.C.H infographic

Students were required to create a visual poster that applied LATCH concepts to at least four principles. Users can select from various recommended data topics such as Pokedex, FFXIV Bestiary, and Dinosaurs.

So we had to utilize digital picture editing and drawing tools to combine the Pokemon into a LATCH infographic poster. We could reuse the monster photos, but we need to produce the remaining elements to complete the poster. The poster needs to be straightforward, with information presented as simply and creatively as feasible.

    Size resolution: 1240 × 1750 pixels or 2048 × 2048 pixels

At first, like other tasks, I started with rough sketches. I wanted to draw as many ideas as possible, so I drew them as I thought of them rather than conditions or things that could be designed.

    Fig 2.2 Sketch 2 (Week 2 / 13.2.2024)

However I didn't have enough time, and I needed to show the information well, so, as you can see in Fig. 2.3, I decided to change the sketch a little and make it. I placed the circle to present the position of the Pokemon evolutionary process.

The next day, the lecturer explained how we can use L.A.T.C.H. to visualize and classify on the whiteboard.

After his explanation, I re-started my task. I copied and pasted different kinds of Pokemon pictures. During the research, I looked at pictures and their types that could explain the evolution of my chosen Pokemon.

    Fig 2.5 Process 2 (Week 2 / 15.2.2024)

And then I started to colour as I imagined my ideas showing the various fields on the map. First of all, I was gradually painting the colour I wanted on a grey background, but strangely, I found the colours difficult overall. Therefore, from Fig. 2.8, it changed a colour that feels much brighter and more warm than before.

    Fig 2.7 Process 4 (Week 2 / 15.2.2024)

    Fig 2.8 Process 5 (Week 2 / 15.2.2024)

At the same time, changing the colour bright reduces the area of blue that was originally meant to fill the grey area. I also drew a Pokémon ball and a pencil like I did in the original sketch.

Finally, to express the evolution of Pokémon, I wrote a picture of each Pokémon and its name.

    FEEDBACK

    WEEK 1

Specific Feedback: He said he liked how I sorted out those broken green M&M's separately.

General Feedback: Overall, the design has already been completed in the rough sketch. However, it would be better to express the colour name of each M&M in their own colours in the table that classifies the colour types.

    WEEK 2

Specific Feedback: He told me to post the intermediate process on the E-portfolio to show the process of how to make it.

General Feedback: The Lecturer said he liked my drawing.

    REFLECTION

At first, I didn't understand what I could learn from doing these tasks. But it was fun to do each task and realize that this is what visualizing the given information is like.

I wanted to do better, but I was regretful that I couldn't. But I was proud to see the results because I did my best.
